Sam Moses is the author of Fast Guys, Rich Guys and Idiots, the acclaimed racedriving memoir; At All Costs: How a Crippled Ship and Two Merchant Mariners Turned the Tide of World War II, a gripping account of a naval battle in the Straits of Gibraltar; and It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This, a heartfelt parenting memoir. His new book is River Without a Cause, the cautionary tale of a whitewater expedition following Theodore Roosevelt's 1914 descent of the Amazon's River of Doubt, with a treacherous side journey that uncovers mahogany raiding in Indigenous territory. A former senior writer for Sports Illustrated, he began writing as a U.S. Navy Seaman on a cruiser engaged in shore bombardment of Vietnam, long letters home. A bodyboarder and landspeed motorcycle racer, he lives in an eco village on the Indonesian island of Lombok, and Hood River, Oregon.
This site is a work in progress. I fumble with it almost every day. All I'm trying to do is communicate with readers, and if I'm lucky sell signed copies of River Without a Cause and It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This. The method of purchase is primitive for now, but it's also personal.
Along with 17 men and 2 women, Sam Moses descended nearly 500 miles of extreme whitewater into the dark heart of the Amazon. Their Rio Roosevelt Expedition followed Theodore Roosevelt's 1914 wake on the "River of Doubt," now named after him, guided by two Cinta Larga chiefs--who, between rapids, tell the tragic story of their tribe. After the wildest whitewater is past, Moses travels with the chiefs to their village, where he uncovers massive mahogany raiding from Roosevelt Indigenous Reserve.
As the Amazon stands on the precipice of hope with the election of a new Brazilian president, and the planet teeters at the precipice of apocalypse from climate change, River Without a Cause offers a page-turning and cautionary tale that blends history, adventure, exploration, folly … and doubt. It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This is a heartfelt parenting memoir by a guy who waited until he was 48 and 50 to have two children, boys that he raised mostly as a single dad. It comes from a million-word journal, in which he documented every little hilarity and more.
